Chicago, the Musical is set to bring us all that jazz and more, as the all-South African productions returns home for its domestic run. Musical maven Carmen Pretorius joins Expresso to share more about the spectacular production, which runs at Cape Town’s Artscape Opera House from 15 March to 14 April, and then at Montecasino’s Teatro from 20 April to 26 May.

If 2018 had a theme song it was undoubtedly Holly Rey’s “Deeper”. No sooner had the magnetic Afro House track hit the South African airwaves than it streaked to number one on every major radio chart before quickly leaping borders. Now, a few months into 2019, “Deeper” is showing no signs of slowing down. The video is rapidly approaching 4.5-million views. For those who have been following Holly Rey over the past eight years, the runaway success of “Deeper” is no surprise. Her career is a masterclass in how to combine a musical gift with integrity, professionalism, and a deeply-embedded sense of community. She set her sights on making music that reflected her belief in being an active participant in the cultural context in which she lives. When radio stations wouldn’t put your music on high rotation, she took it to the taxis. “This brought me closer to the heart of the House movement and allowed me to develop a solid fan base for my music in Durban and Pietermaritzburg,” she says of that time. What’s emerging in the studio and from her writing sessions pushes the musical boundaries of “Deeper” while building on the song’s resonance with music fans from all backgrounds. “I’m not trying to be something that I’m not,” Holly Rey says. “Deeper” was not about getting on the House bandwagon but about giving expression through a love song, to the music that I feel the deepest connection to and my new music builds on that.”
